Hokies Split Weekend at Home
On Friday January 23rd the Virginia Tech ice hockey team took the ice against rivals the University of Virginia at the Roanoke Civic Center. The game was played in front of over 6,000 fans and it proved to be a very exciting atmosphere. From the start of the game the Hokies were able to get many shots on Virginia's goaltender and it would continue throughout the game. Despite numerous chances for Tech the first period ended in a 0-0 tie. Virginia was able to score the first goal of the game on a power play early in the second period. The Hokies responded later in the period with a goal from freshman defenseman Mitch Clark, ending the second period tied at 1. In the third period Virginia Tech were finally able to take advantage of their large shooting advantage. Matt Harrison would get a shorthanded goal to put Tech up and soon after Jimmy Pope would also score making the score 3-1 Hokies. With little time left junior defenseman John Farrell would finish the scoring off with an empty net goal ending the game 4-1 tech.
The following Day Virginia Tech would have their rematch against the Pirates of East Carolina in Roanoke. The Hokies would get goals from freshman forward Andres Morales and sophomore Defenseman Joe Woermer but it was not enough as they would fall 3-2. Virginia Tech will travel to Philadelphia to take on Temple University on Saturday January 31st at 2:30pm.
